Publicly funded Health and Community Services are delivered across Newfoundland and Labrador by four regional health authorities. The services include:

Acute Care Hospital Services
Acute (i.e. short term) care services are provided in hospitals and health centres across Newfoundland and Labrador. The services provided by each facility will vary according to their location. The services range from general surgery, internal medicine and obstetrics to specialized services such as cardiology and neurology. Acute care hospital services are publicly funded.

Long Term Care Services
Long Term Care Facilities and Personal Care Homes
Long Term Care Services are delivered in both long term care facilities and in some hospital/health centres with combined long term and acute care services across Newfoundland and Labrador. (368 KB) All facilities provide 24 hour nursing care plus varying degrees of medical, rehabilitative, social work, pastoral care, dietetic, pharmaceutical, palliative care, respite and recreation programs. Some facilities maintain specialized programs and units for groups with special needs (i.e. Alzheimer disease).
Admission to a long term care bed is based on an assessment conducted by staff of the regional health authorities. A financial assessment is also completed to determine if and how much the individual must pay.
Long term care services are also available through privately owned and operated personal care homes.

Community Based Services
Community based services include:

These services are offered primarily by social workers, nurses and other allied health professionals in community offices located throughout the region. Community based professional services are publicly funded. Subsidies for individuals to obtain community support services and residential options is based on an assessment conducted by staff of the regional health authorities. A financial assessment is also completed to determine if and how much the individual must pay.
