Newfoundland and Labrador’s Q3 2024 population change resulted from gains in international migration, partially offset by natural population decline (fewer births than deaths) and losses from net interprovincial migration.
Net migration totalled 1,362 persons in Q3 2024. Natural population change (births less deaths) was negative, down by 729 persons. A net gain was recorded in international migration (+1,833), while a net loss occurred in interprovincial migration (-471) for the first time since Q3 2020.
- International migration gains stemmed from a large influx of permanent (or landed) immigrants (+1,601).
- On an interprovincial basis, the largest net migration losses were toward Nova Scotia (-178), British Columbia (-164) and Alberta (-157). The largest net gain was from Ontario (+170).
Canada’s population grew by 0.4% from July 1, 2024, to October 1, 2024, the lowest quarterly growth rate in the last two years. The population growth was largely attributable to international migration (+92.0%).
