What’s happening?
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has proposed a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian products that are sold in the United States.
A tariff is a tax that is paid on the importer’s side, so in this case by Americans, which makes the products more expensive, so people are often forced to choose other, cheaper products where available.
What does this mean for us?
This decision could seriously hurt Canada’s economy, including Newfoundland and Labrador, potentially putting between 10,000 to 20,000 jobs at risk in industries like fishing, mining, and oil and gas, as well as people who work in the service industries.
Even if these tariffs don’t impact you directly, it likely will affect people you know.
Should I be worried?
Yes, everyone is concerned.
Canada and the United States have long been close allies and trading partners, so our economies are closely connected. A 25 per cent tariff could damage our economy enough to cause a recession — one that might last for years.
What can I do?
The best way to help send a clear message is through what we buy.
Avoiding American products is a great start, but supporting local businesses is even better. This doesn’t mean changing everything you buy — just do what you can afford. If we all pitch in, it will send a strong message that Americans will notice.
What is our government doing?
Like all Canadians, our government stands united with the Federal Government’s efforts that include:
- Imposing tariffs on American goods,
- Offering financial support to affected industries, and
- Assisting workers impacted by this decision.
We are all in this together, and our government is committed to our country’s interests.
Does buying local really make a difference?
Absolutely.
Think of it as a bunch of small actions that can really add up. If we all make positive changes in what we buy, it can create enough pressure to push the U.S. government to rethink this harmful decision.
In 2023, United States exported approximately $370 billion in goods to Canada. If every household and/or business in Canada reduces their consumption of American products by as little as 10 per cent a year, it would reduce United States exports to Canada by more than $37 billion.
The Buy NL Logo
The Buy NL logo represents Newfoundland and Labrador as part of a Canadian effort to support the local economy. The emblem is a stylized maple leaf that reveals the Newfoundland and Labrador flag, and also resembles a ribbon to reflect the level of quality of our products. The yellow background colour is inspired by the gold in the Provincial flag, and will help the logo stand out prominently on products and in-store placements.
